As 2008 comes to a close, I thought I’d take the opportunity to look back on 2008 and remember some of the authors who died this year:

  • William F. Buckley, Jr. (not a favorite of mine, personally, but we’re honoring all here)
  • Arthur C. Clarke, without whom we would never have had 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Tim Russert, better known as a TV journalist but who did write a few books
  • Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Nobel laureate
  • David Foster Wallace, author of one of Time Magazine’s All Time 100 Greatest Novels (Infinite Jest)
  • Michael Crichton, of Jurassic Park fame
  • Harold Pinter, English dramatist and another Nobel laureate

In the coming days, I’ll be posting my thoughts about some of the “best of 2008” lists currently circulating around and I’ll list my own list of the best books I’ve read all year.
