Happy Birthday, LND!

Exactly one year ago today, I wrote my first blog post for the Librarian Next Door. What started off as a project for a social media graduate school class has now become an integral part of my life. Blogging, it turns out, is in my blood.

In honor of my “blog-aversary,” I present a trip down memory lane to revisit my five favorite posts of the past year:

  • The first post – I wrote about re-reading Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game and how I loved rediscovering it each time I read it again. It’s not necessarily my best post (I certainly think I’ve gotten better as the year has gone on), but it’s the first one and so it has a special place.
  • Thanksgiving 2008 – I decided to imagine Thanksgiving from the perspective of some seriously dysfunctional literary families, including Oedipus and his incestuous brood, the power-hungry Boleyn’s, and, of course, Hamlet’s tragic holiday, where everyone ends up dead.
  • Valentine’s Day 2009 – In keeping with my love of list-posts, this one makes the list for its celebration of famous literary lovers. Love is, after all, a many-splendored thing. It also marked an appearance of two characters who are mentioned more than anyone else on this blog: Lizzie Bennett and Mr. Darcy.
  • Ireland, 2009 – After my first trip to Ireland, during which I soaked up as much Irish literary lore as I could, I wrote about all the things I had learned in the Emerald Isle. Storytelling is big and I got to visit the National Library.
  • My Favorite Things – After a Twitter friend posted her recommended books list, I had a request to compile my own list of favorite books. I took on the challenge and realized I probably read far too much (if there even is such a thing!). My list of favorites topped out at 50 books, in five different categories! Brevity is apparently not the soul of my wit.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the past year as much as I have. Here’s to many years more. Happy reading, bookworms!
