“Birthday” Books

It’s very exciting, bookworms! Tomorrow is my birthday, my 30th (*gulp*) and, to tell the truth, I’ve kind of been dreading it. But thankfully, three of my favorite authors are giving me the best birthday present: they all have new books being released today, just in time to celebrate my birthday! *

  • Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter is the fifth book in Carter’s Gallagher Girl series. When last we saw Cammie the Chameleon, she had decided to strike out on her own to try to find some answers about her family’s mysterious past and maybe figure out what the bad guys (the Circle of Cavan) wanted with her. Carter has said that there will be six books total in this series (which really just feeds my unrealistic and not-so-secret desires to be a spy) and the stakes get higher with every new book. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Cammie and I have no doubt I’ll be left cursing Carter for leaving me with a cliffhanger.
  • Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins is the third and final book in the Hex Hall trilogy. Wonderfully sarcastic Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch, but it turns out she’s really part demon – and that’s not even the worst of her problems. She fell for the enemy, uncovered a conspiracy among the “good” guys and is possibly about the watch into the hands of the very people who want her dead. Hawkins is a hilarious writer, both in “real” life on Twitter and her in books. While I’m sad to see Sophie’s story end, I am anxious to find out if any of my theories about the Hex Hall world are true – plus rumor has it that Hawkins is writing a Hex Hall spin-off series.
  • Froi of the Exiles by Melina Marchetta is a loose sequel and companion novel to Marchetta’s first foray into fantasy, Finnikin of the Rock, which (if you recall) was my pick for the best book of 2010. Naturally, I’m beyond excited to return to Lumatere and find out what’s going on with Finnikin, Isaboe, and of course, Froi. One of my most trusted book blogger sources, Liz B of A Chair, A Fireplace and a Tea Cozy, has already named Froi one of her favorite books of 2012 – and it’s only March! (Froi’s release today marks the U.S. debut of the book; it was previously released in Marchetta’s native Australia last fall.)

I think it goes without saying that I’ve already pre-ordered all three books (I very cleverly managed to save a gift card from Christmas, which I think was both smart and a remarkable show of restraint on my part). So I offer a big THANKS to Ally Carter, Rachel Hawkins and Melina Marchetta for making my 30th birthday more bearable. I can face anything with a good book!

* Okay, yes, I suppose these books aren’t specifically being released for my birthday, but you have to admit, the timing is pretty convenient. Besides, it’s my birthday and I can have delusions of grandeur if I want to.

  1. Happy early birthday! Thirty is a big one — but take comfort in the fact that many of us are right behind you! 🙂 And thirties are totally the new twenties. You’ve got a lot of fun livin’ ahead of you.

Books releasing at your birthday are a great gift — hope you enjoy them all!

I am going to have to give Finnikin of the Rock another go. I couldn’t get into it, but people keep telling me it’s the bee’s knees, so there you go. I’m glad you can get some fantastic books for your birthday!

Meg – thanks! The day itself was exactly really great.

Other Meredith – I would strongly encourage giving Finnikin another chance. It took me awhile to get into it at first, but the payoff was worth it in the end.
